Trowel & Spirit Level

Donated by Martin Fitzpatrick, M&D Fitzpatrick Bricklaying Contractors

This bricklayers trowel and spirit level are closely connected to the Pennywell All Care Centre as they were used to lay the bricks of the walls of the centre. The pointing cement and evidence of their working lives are still clearly evident.

Letter from the donor:

'We are pleased to say that we got the contract to do a full supply and fit of the brickwork on Pennywell All care centre, we started the under-building works in late November 2016 and were finished mid-January 2017.  A month later we started the superstructure brickwork and were still on site until the middle of August 2017 as there were works to be done on the building boundary walls and fitting threshold sills after the superstructure works had been completed.

We had on average seven bricklayers and two labourers on the job for the majority of the time although this did reduce to about three men on the job for the last few weeks.  I personally would have to say this was an enjoyable job to work on as everyone got on very well with each other, although I do remember one evening in late March 2017 when one of my guys, Adrian, and one of the Graham Construction guys, Barry, got into a very heated argument, of course both lads (being of very stubborn nature) thought there were right which I found very amusing but it has to be said it was all in the interest of the job and their opinions differed in what was the quickest and safest way for the job progressing.  However and hour later, the two boys were hugging and making up and having a laugh about who was right and who was wrong which again I found very amusing.

Again on a personal note, I can only say good things about the job and I also enjoyed my time working in the Pennywell area.  I also have to pay tribute to the Graham Construction staff and management on this job, from the Project Manager to the Gate Man, they were all very helpful and professional and I have to thank them for making our job so much easier and pleasant.  For the purpose of the display cabinet I gladly donate a trowel and a spirit level that were used in the building of this project.

Last, but not least, I wish the local community all the best with this wonderful care centre and I hope they get many years' service from it.'
