Sea Glass

Donated by Liz Gould

‘I live in Granton and collect sea glass and pottery from the waterfront beaches in North Edinburgh.  Sea glass is old glass that has been tossed about in the sea for decades and as a result is smoothed into fascinating shapes... I sometimes call the pieces “marefacts” just as you have stone “sculptures” entirely shaped by the wind, called ventrefacts.

I love the colours the shapes and the history evoked. I have old marbles, beads, bottle stoppers, porcelain and any interesting shapes that catch my eye.  Part of the enjoyment is the relaxation of walking the beach with the sound of the waves and sea birds, then coming home to sort the “treasure”.  A lot of it I return to the beach or leave in little piles on the walls for others to find but I still manage to have loads in my flat... and old sweetie jars full.’
