Golf Balls

Donated by Silverknowes Golf Club, Jim Anderson

This set of ‘Penfold Aces’ golf balls were donated by Silverknowe’s Golf Club’s archivist, historian and resident artist, Jim Anderson.  A little bit of golf ball related trivia that Jim is able to share is that before 1970’s golf balls internationally varied in size, however in 1974 golf’s international ruling body the USPGA ruled that golf balls should become a uniform size throughout all world competitions, 1.68mm in diameter, the size that had always been used in Scotland.

Silverknowe’s Golf Club started in 1956 and was notably one of the first Clubs in Scotland to form a ‘C’ Section handicap for its members.  The ‘C’ Section was introduced in 1990  for the ‘lesser gifted’ handicappers those playing off 19- 28.  The ‘A’ Section is for those playing Scratch – 12, and the ‘B’ Section 13 – 24, previously only ‘A’ section players would have a realistic chance of winning a trophy.  The introduction of ‘B’ and then the ‘C’ Section competition means that all club members regardless of ability have a goal to play for and a chance of winning a trophy, Jim Anderson was the proud winner of the Silverknowe’s ‘C’ Section trophy in 1996.
