This cast iron lion’s head donated by the Queensberry bowling club is one of a set which were made and gifted to the club in 1924 by the Queensberry estate who also gave the ground on which the bowling club was created. They are ornamental and practical as they help the bowlers establish the bowling line and the lion’s mouth also provides a container to hold the chalk for marking the bowls in competitions.

 

John Dickson is the archivist for the bowling club and a local history enthusiast and collector. He is passionate about preserving and sharing history within the local community.
